Merry Christmas! We want to pause to recognize the incredible support we’ve received throughout the year. Each contribution - whether it was a gift, a note of encouragement, spreading the word, or giving your time - has played an important role in advancing our work, and we are truly grateful for that support. This time of year is about gratitude and connection, and we are thankful to be part of a community that cares so deeply about the issues facing our province. We hope the days ahead bring you rest, good cheer, and meaningful moments with family and friends. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us at the Manitoba Institute.

We don’t usually use our weekly emails to make a direct monetary ask, but as we approach 2026, we’re also approaching our year-end fundraising deadline. We set a goal to reach $10,000 goal by December 31st - and every donation you make this week will be matched by a generous long-time supporter. This period is especially important for non-profits, and meeting this target will help us sustain and grow the work we do. If you believe in our mission and want to see it continue into the new year, we’d be grateful if you’d consider making a contribution. You can donate by clicking here. Thank you!

Manitoba Public Insurance reports saving nearly $17 million in attempted auto insurance fraud in 2025 following investigations into more than 2,600 suspicious claims. Five high-profile cases uncovered by the Manitoba Public Insurance Special Investigation Unit accounted for roughly $2 million of those savings. The cases involved exaggerated injury claims, arson-related injuries, a falsely reported vehicle theft linked to overseas export, a staged collision involving a luxury vehicle, and a claimant covertly performing physically demanding work while collecting benefits. In each instance, surveillance, video evidence, or inconsistencies in statements led investigators to deny claims and terminate benefits. MPI says insurance fraud increases costs for all ratepayers and that active enforcement helps protect the integrity of the public insurance system. The corporation is encouraging the public to report suspected fraud through its anonymous tip lines as part of wider efforts to control costs and maintain affordability.

Manitoba Hydro says the province will need new, dependable electricity supply by 2030 as demand rises faster than previously forecast. The utility’s newly released 2025 Integrated Resource Plan Road Map warns that population growth, economic expansion, and electrification could create a peak-demand shortfall of up to 600 megawatts within five years if no new capacity is added. The plan sets out a portfolio approach extending to 2035, aligned with a net-zero electricity grid and a net-zero provincial economy by mid-century. Proposed measures include expanded energy-efficiency and demand-response programs, Indigenous-owned wind power, battery storage, upgrades to existing hydro assets, and new natural-gas combustion turbines designed to transition to lower-carbon fuels over time. Hydro claims that early planning is needed to manage long lead times, reduce reliability risks, and avoid sharper future rate increases. A full plan is expected in early 2026.
- The Manitoba Trucking Association is proposing a trucking-specific “trusted employer” certification to help prevent worker abuse within Canada’s immigration system. The program would require companies to demonstrate strong labour compliance, appropriate staffing levels, and the ability to properly support foreign workers with onboarding needs like licensing and documentation. Certified firms would then use this status when applying to hire foreign workers through provincial or federal programs. The Association has discussed the idea with Manitoba’s labour department and plans to raise it with federal officials in 2026. The proposal builds on the MTA’s long-standing efforts to combat labour trafficking, including a major public awareness campaign. Data cited by advocates point to ongoing risks in the sector, including company closures, payroll under-reporting, and challenges enforcing existing immigration and labour rules.
