Stop The Tax Hike
Later this month, the Manitoba government will introduce its next provincial budget.
And, once again, it looks like the NDP will be hiking taxes.
In recent comments about the upcoming budget, Premier Wab Kinew suggested the government is considering yet another tax hike - this time, an income tax hike.
This comes after school tax hikes and the removal of inflation adjustments to tax brackets over the last two years.
While exact details of what the provincial government has planned won't be public until the budget is tabled, whatever form these changes take, Manitobans should be concerned about the possibility of yet more taxes being introduced at a time when families are already struggling with the rising cost of living.
Across the province, households are dealing with higher grocery bills, rising housing costs, and increasing expenses for everyday necessities.
Inflation over the past several years has stretched family budgets and made it harder for many people to get ahead.
The last thing Manitobans need right now is a provincial budget that introduces new taxes or increases the overall tax burden.
Manitoba already faces significant fiscal challenges.
But higher taxes risk making Manitoba even less competitive compared to other provinces.
Skilled professionals, entrepreneurs, and businesses increasingly have the ability to move and invest where economic conditions are more favourable.
If Manitoba becomes a less attractive place to live and work, the province could struggle to attract the workers, investment, and economic growth it needs in the years ahead.
A stronger and more prosperous Manitoba depends on policies that encourage opportunity and economic growth, not policies that make it harder for people and businesses to succeed.
Rather than raising taxes, the provincial government should focus on controlling spending, improving efficiency, and creating conditions that allow Manitoba’s economy to grow.
With the provincial budget not scheduled to be released until March 24th, there's still time for Manitobans to make their voices heard before major fiscal decisions are made.
The Manitoba Institute believes taxpayers deserve a government that respects the money they work hard to earn and understands the pressures families are already facing.
That is why we are calling on the Government of Manitoba to cancel their plans for tax hikes in the upcoming provincial budget and instead focus on responsible fiscal management that protects taxpayers, strengthens the economy, and makes life more affordable for Manitobans.
